Car Battery Died Overnight — Why & What To Do

Waking up to a completely dead battery, when the car was working normally the evening before, has a small number of likely explanations — and they're worth ruling in or out.

Something was left drawing power

The most common cause by far: an interior light that didn't fully switch off, a phone charger or dashcam left plugged in, or headlights accidentally left on. Even a small draw, left overnight, is enough to fully empty a battery that was otherwise fine.

A parasitic electrical fault

Less commonly, a fault in the car's electrical system — a stuck relay, a faulty component, an aftermarket alarm or tracker — can draw power continuously even with everything switched off and the car locked. If this keeps happening on nights when you're sure nothing was left on, this is worth investigating.

The battery was already close to failing

A battery nearing the end of its life can sometimes just tip over from "working" to "dead" overnight, particularly after a cold night, without any obvious external cause. This is more likely if the battery is 3+ years old or you've noticed slower starts recently.
