Why the clicking happens
That clicking is the starter motor's solenoid trying to engage over and over, but not getting quite enough current from the battery to fully turn the engine. The battery has some charge — enough to power the click — but not enough amperage to actually crank the engine. It's a classic sign of a battery that's flat, cold, or nearing the end of its life.
Cold weather makes this worse
Car batteries lose a significant amount of their cranking power in cold temperatures — a battery that's borderline in summer can fail completely on a cold morning. If this is happening more in winter, that's a strong clue the battery itself is the issue rather than something else.
