A car that won't start is almost always one of three things: a flat or failing battery, a bad connection, or a fault in the starter motor. Here's how to tell which one you're dealing with.

Listen to what happens when you turn the key

What you hear tells you a lot before you even open the bonnet:

• Nothing at all, not even dashboard lights — usually a completely dead battery or a loose terminal connection.
• A rapid clicking sound — classic sign of a battery that has some charge but not enough to turn the engine over.
• A slow, groaning crank — the battery is trying but is significantly weak or old.
• Dashboard lights on, but nothing happens when you turn the key — this points more towards the starter motor or ignition switch than the battery.

What to check before calling anyone

Two minute checks that solve this more often than people expect:

1. Make sure the gear selector is fully in Park (automatic) or the clutch is fully depressed (manual with a safety interlock).
2. Check no interior lights, phone chargers, or accessories were left on overnight.
3. Look at the battery terminals for any visible corrosion — a white or blue crusty build-up can break the connection entirely.

When it's time to call for help

If you've ruled out the obvious and the car still won't start, don't keep trying the key repeatedly — that can drain what little charge is left and, in rare cases, damage the starter motor.
